National Scout Challenge

After an absence of several years the group participated in the scout challenge. Sixteen groups from the whole association competed in the challenge. The challenge consisted of a 15 Km walk which the team had to plot using grid references given to them before they left. Along the route each team found checkpoints were the teams were assessed in their knowledge of First aid, scouting knowledge, mapping and pioneering. A fifth checkpoint which tackled knotting was not reached by all (except 1) groups.

Upon arriving at the camp site (Għajn Tuffieħa) each team had to prepare its bivouac and then cook a three course meal on an open fire. Both activities were assessed. All the equipment used for the bivouac and the meal had to be carried in the children’s backpacks. The teams were then again challenged in knotting and teamwork in the morning. The scouts participating in the scout challenge were Julian Sultana (team leader), Giuseppe Farrugia, Jason Micallef, Gordon Vassallo, Simon Sultana and David Camilleri.

When the results were announce the group came in fourth overall, a very good result considering the age of the team and the lack of experience. The group also came first in the Scouting knowledge check point. Well done!
